The words we sang in Lancashire and Leeds back in the late 1940s and early 1950s were not only easier to remember but they scan perfectly when properly sung. Try it - it works.
A Frenchman went into the lavatory
And he was there for half a day
When he finished he couldn't find the paper
So he shouted out in dismay
Ou est le papier?
Ou est le papier?
Monsieur, monsieur, je fais manure
Ou est le papier ?
Maybe French scholars actually sang, "J'ai fait manure" but thickos like me never bothered about the tense.
